empco-directive-2026

From 27 September 2026, EU rules on environmental and sustainability claims are changing — permanently.

The Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo) applies from that date, with no transition period. Generic claims like “eco-friendly,” “green,” or “sustainable” will no longer be usable unless backed by verifiable, recognised evidence. Businesses will also no longer be able to use sustainability labels unless they’re based on an approved certification scheme or issued by a public authority — and whole-product claims will be restricted where the environmental benefit only applies to one part of that product.

This is a meaningful shift across the food and agriculture supply chain, not just for marketing teams. It changes how retailers, producers, and brand owners can talk about the products people buy every day.

It’s also why certification schemes matter more than ever. At GLOBAL S.L.P., our certification standards for animal welfare, environmental practices, and worker safety are independently verified — exactly the kind of substantiated, scheme-based assurance EmpCo is designed to protect, as distinct from unverified marketing language.

We’ve reviewed our own label user manual and licensing terms against EmpCo’s requirements, and we’ll keep certificate holders and license holders informed as further guidance develops.
